Methodology

How the visualization is built
and how to read it.

Constellations of Progress reorganizes 365 Beautiful News records through two complementary lenses: primary topic and geographic coverage. The result is an editorial exploration built from the archive’s metadata.

365stories in Universe
9primary themes
159stories mapped on Earth
206global or broad-scope stories retained in Universe

01 · Topic ownership

One colour, one primary theme

Each story’s primaryTopic determines its colour, constellation membership, filter ownership and legend count. Secondary topics create subtle bridges and connections in Universe. This keeps each filter aligned with the colour and primary theme shown in the interface.

Connections encode shared metadata. Their geometry is designed for visual exploration.

02 · Geographic placement

Coverage through illustrative anchors

Earth maps records with an identifiable geographic scope. Five stories use named city locations; seven use sub-national areas; 111 use country-level coverage; the remainder use continent, region or nearby multi-country coverage.

City

Placed at the named city.

State or region

Placed within the named sub-national area using an illustrative anchor.

Country

Placed on deterministic, land-safe display anchors. Dense countries may use multiple anchors to preserve click and tap access.

Continent or broad region

Placed illustratively within the stated coverage area.

Country-level points communicate national coverage through illustrative display anchors. Global stories and records spanning disconnected locations remain in Universe, where thematic relationships provide the clearest context.

03 · Archive sequence

Archive order as a sequence

The supplied archive includes complete publication dates for part of the collection. The bottom control follows captured collection order and is labelled Archive sequence. A future fully dated dataset can support chronological ordering.

04 · Interaction and accessibility

Designed for mouse, touch and keyboard

Touch selection uses a dedicated finger-sized point lookup, while mouse interaction retains hover feedback. Repeated taps in a dense area cycle through nearby stories. Keyboard users can focus the canvas, use the arrow keys to move through the archive sequence, press Space to play or pause, and Escape to close a story.

Reduced-motion preferences dampen spatial drift and pulsing. Mobile rendering uses a lower pixel-ratio ceiling to reduce GPU load while retaining visual clarity.

05 · Attribution

Source and authorship

All editorial story content and original graphics are sourced from Beautiful News by Information is Beautiful and remain credited to their original publisher. Independent concept, data modelling, interaction design and development by Marco Sors. Source graphics retain their CC BY-SA 4.0 attribution.
